Surprise, Surprise

Good storytelling is something like telling a good joke.  If it’s well told, you don’t mind hearing it again, now and then, but after about the fifth time, it starts to feel like an act of war.  Human beings were never meant to be bored.  If you’re being paid to entertain, you have an obligation to bring something new to the table.

By jove, even journalists know that.

Now, at the outset, we haven’t all heard the same jokes, so our taste is a subjective thing, and I’m quite willing to admit I may have missed something very, very profound in the new NBC show “Revolution,” but after trying very hard to watch an episode and a half, I’m thinking the only thing remotely novel about the project was the premise: a world without electricity.   Continue Reading »

Risky, Dangerous Decisions

Click to Check out the New Design (under construction)Colony Bay matte artist Jonathan Neil is working on a new online theater for the show.  Even though it’s not finished, it’s so clean and captivating, I check it out every hour or so.  You can too, by clicking on the graphic on the right.  (Not every hour if you don’t want to.)  Fairly soon, we will be updating the site so that those who have joined the colony can watch any of the shows, online, without re-purchasing a ticket.

We did a few things backwards in our effort to bring a period drama to the screen.   Continue Reading »

The King’s Church

If you’ve been following Courage, you’ve been watching the exploits of one Reverend “Silence Laud,” marvelously portrayed by Rutgers-educated actor Donal Thoms-Cappello.   Quite a few fans have demanded this particular villain receive some heavy measure of justice, and one fan has even detailed the precise methods of retribution, many of which I cannot share with a family audience, except to say they were inventive and prolonged.

From the very beginning of the Courage project, we wanted to mirror some of the spiritual conflict faced by our ancestors in both the 17th and 18th centuries.   Continue Reading »

The Learning Curve

Random Lessons in Building an Indy TV Show

We’ve all had to wear so many hats around here, at Colony Bay, that we pick up our business lessons on the fly, between producing shows.   That may not be the wise way to do it, but if you look at most scripted television these days, the big boys don’t know how to do it either, so, at least for my own benefit, I’m recounting the partial truths I pick up along the way:

Entertainment is a Tremendous Bargain: When someone rounds up the money to build, say, a truck-making assembly line, you can’t imagine the end product being available to millions of people for just about nothing.   Continue Reading »

Meet our Director of Photography, Drew Ganyer.

Drew Ganyer shooting from the set of Courage, New Hampshire.Inspired by some of the cinematic greats, such as Terrance Malick, Brian Taylor, Ron Ficke, and Mark Neveldine, Drew Ganyer is a prolific cinematographer who greatly enjoys observing light. He was formally trained at the Rochester Institute of Technology, where it was easy to spend every spare moment working as a cinematographer on student projects. Besides shooting Courage, New Hampshire, Drew has shot several features, including “The Ruffian.”

When did you know that you wanted to get into cinematography?

I knew that I wanted to get into cinematography when I was working on a reality TV show during the summer, before my senior year of high school. Continue Reading »

One of the hardest working crews on the set is the art department.
